Phil Towle, Principal Associate with Deviate, recently appeared on CBS News in a piece on Metallica’s newest venture

Grand Blanc, MI – October 3, 2013 – Phil Towle, Principal Associate with Deviate, recently appeared on CBS News in a piece on Metallica’s newest venture, their 3-D Imax movie, Metallica: Through the Never. Phil was Metallica’s Performance Coach, from 2001-03, helping them navigate through their mid-life meltdown as partially captured by the award winning documentary, Some Kind of Monster.

“Phil cherishes each client relationship. He grows them… they grow him. I was so happy to see how they have evolved in the CBS clip 10 years later. He’s so grateful for whom they’ve become and what they’ve, collectively, accomplished as people… rightfully so,” said Deviate Founder and CEO, Ryan Blanck.

Phil states, “As we can see from this CBS interview, they’ve courageously transformed their internal dysfunction into a ‘poster family’ for mental/emotional health. You can tell that they have built sustainable well-being into their daily personal and professional lives, as evidenced by the way they treat, respect and love one another.

He continued, “In early 2001, I was flown to San Francisco to help save a Metallica on the verge of self-implosion. From our first meeting through their myriad of challenges and crises, rehab, recording …we worked our asses off to weave perspective, character, honesty, trust, respect and love into the well worn fabric of the most ‘successful’ and celebrated metal band on the planet.

“To a man, pushed by legitimate threat of dissolution, they poured themselves into the uncomfortably introspective coaching process. Today, along with Rob, their families, incomparable fans and equally amazing support staff, they reap the everlasting rewards sown from optimized self-exploration.”

Phil on his craft, “My work (largely in Sport, Entertainment and Business) mines each human personality for our upside possibilities, and, mentors even larger universal accomplishments from maximized interdependence, collaboration, and teamwork. My experience is that ‘greatness’ (our living obligation) is most often, achieved when bravely going off track, on purpose…’deviating’ from the seductive comforts of familiarity and sameness.

Lars Ulrich drummer and co-founder said in a 2004 interview withPsychology Today, “As we started chipping away with Phil, we were introduced to different ways of looking at things. Therapy is kind of like a think tank for your brain; how you connect with yourself, with (those) around you. It was amazing to sit there with people who you’d spent over half your life with and get to know them for the first time,…get to love them for the first time!”

About Metallica?
Metallica is an American heavy metal band from Los Angeles, California. The band’s fast tempos, instrumentals, and aggressive musicianship placed them as one of the founding “big four” of thrash metal alongside Slayer, Megadeth, and Anthrax. A film titled Some Kind of Monster documented the recording process of St. Anger and the tensions within the band during that time. In 2009, Metallica was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
